Seminar Information

Seminar Information

We have recently assembled several Training Seminars that we are able to provide to interested groups or schools

Our purpose in making these seminars available, is to spread the unique information that we are able to provide. Our purpose is NOT to "recruit" anyone to our system of training. These seminars are provided to enhance "whatever" system that you teach/train in. We feel that we can provide useful, accurate and functional training in each of the areas that we provide training for.

The various seminars that we offer, cover several subjects and levels. For any of our Tuite Technique/Application Courses, we have only one perquisite course (our “6 Basic Tuite Principles”).

Having once attended this introductory course, the student will have a foundation that can be used for both defensive application and for further research (with tuite as well as kyusho and impact applications).

We also offer courses in the practice of Shodo and the various studies related to it. The introductory course includes the initial instruction for using and caring for the brush, as well as instruction for performing all of the strokes necessary for producing any/all of the kanji.

Additional Calligraphy courses include classes to determine an attendee's "Name Seal Kanji"(for use with a "Seal-Stone"). We also teach a basic "Katakana" Translation Course (useful for learning how to correctly brush a student's name's for certificates).

Seminars are priced according to subject content and the instruction time (commonly 4, 6, 12hr.) of the seminar requested, Any of these classes could also be offered as a multi-day seminar format as well (if desired). Contact us for pricing on what course you'd be interested in hosting. Minimum course attendance level (student count) for all courses is 10 students. Course Instruction costs are predetermined for each subject (based upon attendee count, this allows the host to set the price of the course for attendee's).

Tuite Seminar Courses Being Offered

6 Basic Tuite Principles: This course will introduce, and explain the individual principles that can be utilized by the student/instructor to both improve their technique execution, and develop new technique.

Foundation Tuite Techniques: This course will expand the attendee's knowledge of the fundamental (foundation) tuite techniques. It's from these techniques that the majority of Taika Oyata's technique are derived from. Familiarity with these technique's will provide the student with a broader knowledge base for improvisation of new technique application.

Tuite Techniques Applied for Law Enforcement Use: This course is has been developed for use by Law Enforcement/Security personnel. Our instructor's posses over 20 years (each) experience with L.E. instruction/application. This course will correct the execution of numerous standard ("academy" taught/utilized) techniques, making them easier to apply and more effective to utilize. This course will review Basic Handcuffing, Search and Restraining techniques.
These courses are also made available for Security/L.E.
 Prisoner Compliance/Handcuffing/Escort
 Unarmed Defensive Tactics/ Handgun Retention
 (Straight/Expandable*) Nightstick Implementation

 Defensive Applications 1.0

This course introduces the attendees to the Defensive Applications utilized in Oyata Te's curriculum. The attendees will be shown the initial theory's originally taught by Taika as well as their use in conjunction with the basic applications that are taught within the Oyata Te Methodology.
These theories are then exampled through the performance of some of those introductory defensive techniques being taught then practiced by the attendees.

Basic Oriental Brush Calligraphy Courses

Flowing Hand Calligraphy School
(Nagare Te Shuji Juku)

The Ryu Shin Kan/ Ken Shu Kai Dojo is the home of the Flowing Hand school of Oriental Brush Calligraphy. This instruction is overseen by Tony K. Skeen and provides guidance for practicing the art of Shuji/Shodo. The instruction provided will guide the new and experienced student of Oriental brush calligraphy in all popular aspects of pursuing this art form.
Provided Instruction includes:
Basic tool choice, care & use, familiarization with the various aspects/branches of the art, brushing methods for 4 of the 5 most commonly utilized “styles” of Japanese brush calligraphy (those “Styles” are “Kaisho”(“Block-style”), “Gyosho”(“Semi-cursive), “Sosho”(Fully-cursive) and “Tensho”(“Seal Stone Characters”). That instruction will include character determination {choice} and placement, for name translation and use upon a personal/school seal (stone), and students are guided in the use of the “Nelson Japanese-English Character Dictionary”.
Classes are flexible (for student availability) and are provided in an individual format, so a student can proceed at their own rate. Group instruction is also available (including those courses that are “subject specific”).
Individual (private) classes are $20/2-Hr class.
If/when weekly classes (taught at the Ryu Shin Kan/Ken Shu Kai Dojo) exceed 3 students, those classes are provided at $15/2-Hr. Class. Current Students of that school attend FREE of charge.
(Group Rates are determined by attendance level and time allowed/subject being instructed),

Seminar Course rates can be negotiated. Those negotiations are based upon whether supplies (brushes, paper, ink, etc.) are provided by the instructor, or if the group will be “self” supplied (the instructor can provide information/locations for acquiring the required materials) , the number of attendee's, and any distance/travel considerations/costs, as well as the subject being taught.

Approximate/Suggested Time requirements for “basic” instruction in the various subjects are provided below (Individual class descriptions provided below):

                                                                                        = 2 Hr.
“Scroll” and “Certificate” lay-out and creation        = 2 Hr.
Introduction to utilizing Nelson's Kanji Dictionary" = 1 Hr.
(*This class can be done in 2-3Hr. Classes)

The provided Weekly classes (taught at the Ryu Shin Kan/Ken Shu Kai Dojo) include instruction for each of the “Seminar” courses (over the time of the students enrollment within that class).

The technique/style of brushed characters taught at the Flowing Hand school, is that taught by the Nihon Shuji (Japanese Calligraphy) Association. The instructor of the provided classes received his training and certification from that school (during his 24 years of study/practice within that school) to provide the technique and manner of brushing provided by them.

Basic Introduction to Brush Calligraphy (2-hour class time)
This Class will introduce the student to the (“Basic”) Tool's utilized in the practice of Japanese Calligraphy (“Shuji/Shodo”) and the performance/creation of some of the brush strokes utilized in this art. The class is intended to provide the student with (enough) knowledge to determine if they would be interested in further pursuing that practice.

Instruction of the Strokes Utilized in “Shodo”
(8-hour class or 2-4 hour classes)

This Course provides instruction in reproducing all of the strokes utilized in the practice of “Shodo” (“Japanese Brush Calligraphy”). This style of brush writing includes 27+ (different) “strokes” that are utilized to brush the Chinese Characters (Kanji). It is based upon the instructed style of “Nihon Shuji” (the Japanese Calligraphy Association).

Western “Name” Translation to Katakana
(commonly for use on certificates/awards)         (2-hour class time)

This class will aid the attendee in the translation of their name into “Katakana”. These “kana” are how the Japanese will write/convert a “foreigner's” name (in)to a (written) manner that a Japanese individual can read it. Though numerous commonly used “kana-combinations” are recognized, the kana utilized are determined by the individual (for the correct/desired “sound” of their spoken name). This class will assist the student/instructor for that translation (commonly utilized on “certificates”, “awards”, etc.). The majority of (American/European) names can be written several ways (depending upon the manor the individual would prefer their name to be spoken aloud).

Seal-Stone (Hankyo) character Determination
(for conversion to “Tensho” for “Seal-Stones”)   (2-hour class time)

This course is intended to guide the student in the process required for determining the proper kanji to utilize for the creation of a seal-stone (either personal or group/dojo) in the “Tensho” style of writing. (This course is more easily accomplished after the student knows how they want their name written in Katakana).

Scroll” and “Certificate” lay-out and creation
 (2-hour class time)

“Scrolls” are (typically) larger kanji (character) pieces brushed on (larger) paper pieces and convey a concept or principle.
Certificates/awards are (commonly) smaller written pieces that bestow (some) manor/level of achievement. These “examples” can be provided by the Seminar Host, or by request (for the instructor to provide).
This class provides instruction in the basic “lay-out” of certificates and/or a “scroll”. It can be tailored to provide specific or general (subject) instruction. Instruction includes (general) aesthetic considerations, including placement of (any) “seals” utilized.

Introduction to utilizing "Nelson's Kanji Dictionary"
(30 minutes to 1-Hour)

This (no cost) course provides instruction the fundamental use of Nelson's Kanji Dictionary. This Text is the best (for Calligraphy) Reference Standard that's readily available across the U.S. and is considered the industry "standard" (for Japanese to English translation purposes). This course is commonly included with many of the instructed courses (when sufficient time is allotted).
